What to Expect During a Houston Pool Build
A clear-eyed walkthrough of what actually happens during a custom pool build in Houston — from first sketch to first swim, and how long each step usually takes.

A new pool is one of the bigger projects you'll take on as a homeowner, and the most common feedback we get from clients early on is some version of: "I just want to know what's going to happen and when." So here's the short version of how a typical Venture Pool Company build goes, start to finish.
1. The first conversation
Before we sketch anything, we sit down (in person if you're nearby, on a call if you're not) and talk through what you actually want out of the pool — how often you'll swim, who's using it, whether it's mostly for entertaining, whether you have kids or dogs to plan around. We'll walk your yard, look at sun and shade, and check for the things that quietly drive the budget: utility lines, slope, soil, and access for equipment.
2. Design and bid
We turn that conversation into a design and a real bid — itemized, no surprises. Houston pool builds usually involve a few decisions that feel small but matter: pool finish (plaster vs. quartz vs. pebble), tile, coping, decking material, equipment package. We walk through each one with you so you understand the trade-offs and the cost differences.
3. Permits and prep
Permitting in Houston-area jurisdictions is straightforward but not instant — usually a couple of weeks. We handle it. While we wait, we mark utilities, plan equipment placement, and confirm access for the excavator.
4. Excavation and steel
This is the dramatic part — your yard becomes a pool-shaped hole over a day or two. Steel rebar goes in next, tied into the shape that will hold the gunite.
5. Gunite (the shell)
Gunite is shot from a hose into the rebar form, building up the actual pool shell. After it's shot, it cures for about 28 days. During that time we plumb the equipment lines, set the deck, and frame any spa or feature work.
6. Tile, coping, and decking
Tile and coping go on once the shell is solid. Decking — concrete, pavers, travertine, whatever you chose — comes next. This is when the project starts to look like a real pool instead of a construction site.
7. Plaster (or quartz/pebble) and fill
The interior surface goes on last. As soon as it's down, we start filling — and we don't stop the hose until the pool is full, because plaster needs to cure underwater. We'll be there to start the chemicals and the equipment as soon as it's full.
8. Startup and handoff
For the first week or two we'll be in and out, brushing the surface daily and balancing chemicals. We'll walk you through how the equipment works, when to clean the filter, and what your weekly maintenance schedule will look like (or, if you'd rather not think about it, we run a maintenance route that handles all of that for you).
How long does the whole thing take?
Most Houston builds run 8 to 12 weeks from the day we break ground, weather permitting. Houston weather is the biggest variable — heavy rain in the spring or fall can stretch things out by a week or two. We'll always tell you the truth about where we are in the schedule.
